Event overview (see highlighted text below for updates as of February 26, 2012)
We now have some good snow on Mt. Hood, so we are offering a second ski-orienteering event this season. On Sunday, March 4, we will use a new map of the Mt. Hood Meadows Nordic Center.
There will be two courses:
Beginner Course – 2 km, 25 m climb, 7 controls
Short Course – 5 km, 100 m climb, 8 controls
We hope to stretch ourselves and introduce electronic punching in the snow so participants can compare split times between controls.
Location
Mt. Hood Meadows (lower lot) is located across from the Teacup Lake sno-park, on Hwy. 35, eight miles east of the Hwy. 26 split. Click here for directions. Meadows parking fills up very early these days. We suggest that you get there before 9 a.m. We will try to open the courses early as well.
Ski rentals
If you don't own skis, no worries. You can rent skis right there at Mount Hood Meadows. There are also several local stores that offer Nordic ski rentals: REI (only available at their downtown Portland store, 1405 NW Johnson St.); Mountain Shop (1510 NE 37th Ave., Portland); Next Adventure (corner of SE Stark and Grand). And there are places in Sandy along the main drag (Otto's Cross Country Ski Shop, 38716 Pioneer Blvd.) It's always best to get your skis early in case there's a race!
All participants must check out through the course finish gate before leaving the park, even if the team does not finish the course or returns after the course closes.
Registration and other costs
The event is open to the public.
Note: If you join CROC at this event, ($15 individual, $20 family/group annual membership), your event fee is FREE! Ask about this at meet registration. All participants must register and sign the liability waiver before entering the course.
In addition to event fees below, you'll also need a sno park pass for parking (available at Meadows) as well as to pay a discounted $7 trail fee for Ski-O participants. Make sure you tell them you're doing the event. Participants will wear numbered bibs provided by Meadows.
The Columbia River Orienteering Club fees are:
$8 - individual (non-member)
$12 - group (non-member, going out using one map)
$6 - individual (club member)
$10 - group (club member, going out using one map)
$2 - extra copy of color map
$1 - compass rental
$1 - epunch rental
Each participant or team receives a course map.

Blue skies and warm temperatures welcomed us to a new ski-o venue at Mt. Hood Meadows. There was plenty of snow, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. From what I could tell from the post-race discussions, people made good route choices depending on their equipment – backcountry and classic track skis were better for longer shortcuts through the woods, and fast skating skis made longer main trail options the better choice while still allowing for taking short off-trail connectors. This was our first use of electronic punching in the snow, and people enjoyed the ability to compare splits.
Thanks go to Dale Peters of the Nordic Center for encouraging CROC to add ski-o at Meadows and helping us set up the event. And thanks also to the volunteer crew on the day of the event: Vanessa, Scott, and Joe.
