Mt. Tabor - Permanent (TRIM) Orienteering Course
Come practice orienteering at CROC’s permanent course at Mt. Tabor Park in southeast Portland.
This park offers a variety of trails, roads, viewpoints and, yes, a few “Keep Portland Weird” control points, such as a soapbox derby track, an extinct volcano core (one of two in the country) and a statue by Gutzon Borglum, who also carved Mt. Rushmore.
Unlike a normal O-course where the control points are flags placed the morning of the event, this permanent course uses fixed objects such as signs, buildings, playground equipment, etc. At each control point marked on the map, your course question sheet has a multiple-choice question about that point. Answer it, then move to the next control.
The course has 20 controls, and is about 3.5 km long.
Officially:
- The course starts at the triangle marker and finishes at the double circle marker. (same location on this course, in the NW corner of the map)
- Visit the controls in the proper order (1, then 2, then 3, etc.)
- Complete the course all at one time.
Unofficially:
- You can start anywhere you want.
- You can walk as much or as little of the course as you like.
- You can visit the controls in any order. Just get out there and have some fun!
Please share any comments you have about the course with us! Are any controls missing? Did you have a good time? Cheers or jeers, we want to know. Send your thoughts to email@croc.org.
