Hoyt Arboretum

Portland, Oregon

Saturday, November 10, 2001

This is it. Your last chance to go orienteering in 2001.

Take a tour of some of Portland's favorite attractions: Hoyt Arboretum,
the Japanese Gardens, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Oregon Zoo.

Courses will be offered for all levels, from beginners to advanced.

In addition, we're trying out something different. Many of our beginning
orienteers are quite fit, and are looking for a greater physical
challenge than the traditional "white" beginners course offers. But they
are not secure enough in their navigation skills to try the off-trail,
brush-beating treks that the longer, advanced courses entail. So we're
taking the easier navigation of a beginners course and combining it with
the length of an advanced course. Volkswalkers, trail runners, adventure
races, and those who want the grand tour of the park's best features,
try this course.

Volunteers, we can use your help. Interested parties can call Jerry
Rhodes at 360-253-8632, or email o_boy_red@hotmail.com.

Directions to the start:

Start and finish will be at the usual place: The shelter right across
the street from the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor's Center. To reach it by car,
take the Oregon Zoo exit from Highway 26 (the Sunset Highway). Follow
the road west through the zoo parking lot, past the World Forestry
Center, and over the hill. After you cross the hill, take a right and
there you are.

If you take public transportation, walk north over the hill from the Zoo
Max Station, which you can reach from the Max Blue Line, or Tri-Met
bus 63.

We'll start registration at 10:30 a.m. The start times will be 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. If you're going to do the long beginner course, plan for
enough time to complete a 5-6 mile hike by 3 p.m.
