Cook Park Beginner Event Results

Cook Park, Tigard, Oregon

April 22, 2001

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than an orienteering event on a new map. Over 100 people showed up to find their way around Cook Park, a suburban park located along the Tualatin River in Tigard. Dylan Bartholomew and Logan Taylor lead the way on the 2.3 km White Course in 22:55, followed closely by the rest of the Taylor clan (Douglas, Ainsley, and Jocelyn). Also at the top of the pack was Micah Merryman, who was just passing by and talked her dad into giving this unique sport a try.

The 4.1 km Yellow Course took folks along the river to Durham City Park and back. Some advanced orienteers used this event as a sprint race, with Mal Harding zipping through in 26:13. This was a good way to practice reading an unfamiliar map on the fly. The top newcomers were Tom Chisholm and Travis Conway. Most people on both courses were not out to race, and just enjoyed the navigation challenges and a nice hike. Fortunately, most teams made it in before the April showers started in the afternoon.
