CROC's National
Orienteering Day
at Mt Tabor, May 4th 2002
- John Bartholomew
It's an annual tradition now: O-clubs all across the US hold
meets for National Orienteering Day on the first weekend in May,
and CROC played its part again this year.
Mal Harding designed three courses (white, yellow and "pink"
- a long
beginner course at 4.6 km) for this meet, including a diplomatic visit
to the security forces guarding the Mt Tabor water reservoirs. Our courses
had to avoid bringing our participants too close to the reservoir fences
due to heightened water supply concerns after Sept. 11th. Fortunately
for us, Mal convinced the friendly guards that we were no threat, and
that we would remind our participants about giving the reservoir a wide
berth. As we expected, there were no "incidents"...!
With sunny but somewhat chilly morning weather, we had roughly 100
attendees with 104 course starts (ie, a few people did two courses).
About 75% of the event participants were not CROC members, and about
25% overall indicated that this was their very first O meet. Another 35%
didn't check yes or no on this question, so up to 60% of the meet
participants were either first timers, or only occasional orienteers.
I recognized several recent Mazamas mountaineering class students at the
meet, and we had one or two groups of adventure racers, as well, starting
to practice their navigation for possible summer races. Two new memberships
were accepted at Mt Tabor, with another one or two more groups taking
forms to "think about joining". While our attendance this year
was down
from last year (100 vs 180), we had a much larger group of volunteers
this year, resulting in shorter registration & start lines and more
smiles at the finish! There was also more time and opportunity for club
members to chat with interested newcomers afterwards, too - an important
aspect of attracting more regular meet attendees.
As part of National Orienteering Day, CROC received several
Brunton compasses and Maptech software CD-ROMs to give away to event
participants. The lucky recipients of these items this year were:
Brunton compasses:
D'Amico family - Vancouver WA
Rathkey family - Portland, OR
Jerome Schiller - Portland OR
Gregory family - Portland OR
Juli Opitz - Portland OR
Maptech software:
Matthew Picio - Portland OR
I'd like to thank all the volunteers who helped make this
a successful N.O.D. event again this year: Mal Harding, Glen Cafferty,
Mike Poulsen, Jerry Rhodes, Rafael Gutierrez, Kim & Dylan Bartholomew,
Virginia Church, Donna Brown, Brian Hauck, Jeff Watson and
Philip Kollas (home on leave from a hot, sandy place half a world
away...! Thanks Philip!)
