Teacup Lake Ski-Orienteering 10 March 2002

A week before the event I was worred about the conditions on Mt. Hood. Oh,
we had plenty of snow, about 10 feet or so, but it was hard and icy. I was
concerned about safety on some of the routes I had planned, so I was hoping
for some fresh powder. Then we got a storm system, followed by another one,
followed by ... Well, anyway, it wouldn't be called ski-o if you didn't
have snow.

The trails were machine-groomed on Friday, but they needed touching up by
snowmobiles on Sunday morning. Even so, it was slow going for the almost
three dozen people who braved the snowy conditions for our third ski-o at
Teacup Lake. Still, there weren't many complaints about the soft, forgiving
snow.

Kevin Weidemann and Jeff Eamons took top honors on the Short Course.
Unfortunately, the snowy conditions prevented them from getting a peek at
the peak of Mt. Hood from the top section of the course. Paula Whipple
whipped through the Medium Course even though the conditions were not kind
to skaters. In three years, this is the first course to actually have a
control located at the lake (named for its size, not its shape).

On the Long Course, Jeff Watson prevented Elis Eberlein from defending his
title from last year. This was Elis' return to orienteering following knee
surgery, and he certainly looks in fine shape. Andy Dale, metal edges and
all, finished third.
