COURSE SETTERS NOTES BIG MUDDY 2 It has been another warm wet spring in Central Oregon. Lots of flowers are in bloom and the grass is still green – magnificent scenery! The weather still contains some rain predictions at this writing so one should anticipate conditions anywhere from between 50 degrees and showers to 90 degrees and a baking wind. Last year I touted how even and pleasant the footing was...but that turned out to be just certain areas and the softness of the still moist soil. I now know, and was frequently told that this area has its full share of rocky terrain. If the soil dries to the hardness it was last year, those cow tracks and any bump or dip in the soil will be hard-edged and unforgiving. Good footwear and socks will at least alleviate the inevitable blisters this area can generate. As we are a week later this year, the cheet grass will be ripe and there WILL be a seed problem. Gaiters or some form of shoe and lower leg protection is warranted. The map is again the USGS 1/24000 on waterproof paper. The contours are very accurate. The ‘vegetation’ boundaries are accurate also, but remember that a fire 6 years ago killed most of the trees. Also remember the northern part of the map has some 40 ft contours rather than 20 ft. More of the prominent cliffs have been added. There are ranch roads on the map that are quite faint now. There are some new fences in the SE corner of the map – but we have not made a practice of showing fences. There are 54 controls again this year. They range in value from 30 to 100 pts. All but 3 or 4 are new locations. There are 5 water controls, and there will be 1000 gallons of water at the hash house area provided by the ranch. Streams will have water at this time of year, and are useable if purified. One of the controls is a petrified log. There are other pieces in the area. If you want to impact your score by checking out the other petrified wood outcrops I can show you the appropriate area. The Warehouse will be the Hash House again and camping will be in the field west of the building as it was last year. We look forward to your having a great time this year!
