Extended beginner's class to be taught in Vancouver

For the second year, CROC is working with the Vancouver/Clark County Parks and Recreation Department to offer an orienteering class for beginners. Participants will have a session 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. March 13, in a classroom yet to be assigned, and a field session Saturday morning, March 17. Then they'll be on their own to participate in the Battle Ground Lake meet. Jerry Rhodes is the lead instructor.

The classroom section will elaborate on the beginners clinics we offer at each CROC meet. In particular, we'll be emphasizing how people can apply the principles of the sport to their own map-and-compass navigation for hiking, cross-country skiing, or other wilderness-type activities. Most of the students will likely not be into orienteering (yet!). By presenting the sport in this fashion, we'll be giving them some valuable skills, and just might convert a few to avid orienteers.

Interested people may register by sending a check for $20 made out to "CROC" (sorry, arrangements with the city/county don't allow member discounts), to CROC, c/o 15005 NE 48th St., Vancouver, WA 98682-6375. Class size is limited to the first 30 people who pay.
