Event overview
We are set for ski-orienteering again this year at Teacup Lake. Why not try a little orienteering in the snow? Teacup is always a great place to ski. And even if you ski there regularly ski orienteering gives you a different way of experiencing Teacup Lake. Beginners at orienteering are welcome, as always.
The cabin at Teacup Lake will be our event headquarters. If you are not a Teacup Lake Nordic Club member, you we will encourage you to make the daily donation of $10 per adult skier ($5 for kids 6-12) to help cover the cost of the grooming of the ski area. Sno-Park permits are required to park at the trailhead.
TEACUP COURSE SETTER’S NOTES
All controls are on groomed ski trails. The long and medium courses (see descriptions below) have options to ski off trail in ski tracks that will be skied in before the event.
All skiers must follow the one-way restrictions on the map and follow any DO NOT ENTER signs posted by Teacup Lake Nordic Club.
There are 3 maps, but 5 courses due to the design of the courses.
SHORT
Short is suitable for white- and yellow-level orienteers and novice cross-country skiers and is 3.7km long.
MEDIUM
There are two courses on the medium map. The entire 7.7km course is designed as a brown course, though it is longer than the orange course. The shorter orange course, 4.7km, is intended to offer some navigation challenge for intermediate skiers, whereas brown provides both navigation and ski challenges for more advanced skiers. As will become more apparent when looking at the map, the orange course skips controls 2, 3, and 4.
LONG
The long map also has two courses: green and red. The red course is 12.1km and is the full course on the map. The green course is 9.5 km and avoids some of the climb that is found on red as well. When looking at the long map, the green course will skip control 4.
COURSE LENGTH SUMMARY
White/yellow: 3.7km
Orange: 4.7km
Brown: 7.7km
Green: 9.5km
Red: 12.1km
Ski rentals
If you don't own skis, no worries. There are several local stores that offer Nordic ski rentals: REI (only available at their downtown Portland store, 1405 NW Johnson St.); Mountain Shop (1510 NE 37th Ave., Portland); Next Adventure (corner of SE Stark and Grand). There are also places in Sandy along the main drag (Otto's Cross Country Ski Shop, 38716 Pioneer Blvd.), It's always best to get your skis early in case there's a race.
All participants must check out through the course finish gate before leaving the park, even if the team does not finish the course or returns after the course closes.
Registration and other costs
The event is open to the public. Note: If you join CROC at this event, ($15 individual, $20 family/group annual membership), your event fee is FREE! Ask about this at meet registration. All participants must register and sign the liability waiver before entering the course.
In addition to event fees below, you'll also need a sno park pass for parking as well as to pay a trail fee (if you're not a Teacup Nordic Club member) - a suggested $10 donation to Teacup Lake (annual membership in Teacup Nordic covers this fee). Sno park permits are not for sale at the event.
The Columbia River Orienteering Club fees are:
- $8 - individual (non-member)
- $12 - group (non-member, going out using one map)
- $6 - individual (club member)
- $10 - group (club member, going out using one map)
- $1 - extra copy of color map
- $1 - compass rental
Each participant or team receives a course map and a control description sheet.

Driving Directions
- From Portland, take US Hwy 26 east towards Mt Hood, and pass through Government Camp
- Roughly 2 miles after Government Camp, exit onto OR-35 N/State Route 35 N toward Hood River
- The Teacup Lake Sno-Park and Mt Hood Meadows Nordic Center are about 8 miles ahead of this junction. Teacup is on the right (south), Meadows Nordic on the left (north).
NOTE: You must purchase and bring a sno-park permit with you - they are NOT available at Teacup. Check weather conditions in advance, and bring chains/traction tires is always a good idea.
