EVENT OVERVIEW

This is an urban orienteering event, where you travel on mapped streets, walkways, trails, or parks to find as many control points as possible in either 1, 2 or 3 or hours. You verify each control you find by answering a multiple choice question on a Q&A sheet that comes with your map.

Here's how it works:

  • You can visit the controls in any order you like.

  • You do not have to find every control point.

  • Each control has a score value indicated by the first digit in the control number (control 39 would be worth 3 points, control 67 would be worth 6 point, etc.).

  • Each question that you answer correctly gives you the points for that control. (No trick questions; they’re easy to answer.)

  • Each wrong answer subtracts the points for those control sites. Don't guess at answers for controls not visited.

  • You lose one point for each minute that you exceed the time limit of your course. Bring a watch or phone; don't be late!

  • Placings are determined by points, then by time. The person with the most points wins. If two or more participants have the same points, their placings are determined by elapsed time.

  • Free parking is available on streets adjacent to the park.

  • Stay on public roads, walkways, paths, or mowed areas of public parks at all times. Stay off of private property (marked with olive green on your map), private roads, and private walkways at all times. Private roads and walkways are marked with purple Xs on your map.

We are planning to check the answer sheets at the event so that we can post results during the event.

High visibility clothing is strongly recommended. You will be along streets with varying amounts of car traffic. Always look out for cars, especially when you are on a street without sidewalks.

NEW TO ORIENTEERING? WELCOME!

Our events are open to both members and non-members, and beginners are welcome.

  • Have a look at our “New to O?” webpage, which covers just about every question you may have.

  • At most events, we offer free beginner clinics (about 10 minutes) to teach you everything you need to know. These are typically at 10:30 and 11:00.

  • If you'd like to get reminders about upcoming events, sign up at our newsletter page. (No more than a couple of emails per month, we promise!)

  • Thanks for coming out and trying something new, we think you'll like it!

TIMES

  • Beginner clinics: 10:30 and 11:00 AM

  • Course starts: anytime between 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

  • Course closes: 4:00 PM

All participants must check out through the course finish area before leaving, even if the participants have not finished their course or they return after the course closes (don't be late -- that can cause us to create a search party).

VOLUNTEERS

All CROC events are put on by volunteers, and the meet director can almost always use some extra hands. Please keep in mind:

  • No prior experience is needed for many of the tasks

  • You can help out AND still run your course of choice

Typical ways to assist are: helping with starts and finishes, checking in folks at registration, and picking up control streamers after the course closes. Typical shifts are 60 to 90 minutes long.
If you'd like to help, please choose a volunteer slot when you register online.
