Designing Point-to-Point Courses

  • Saturday, March 25, 2023

  • 10:00 a.m. - noon

  • Location: Taborspace in SE Portland

  • For CROC members only

Are you interested in learning how to design point-to-point orienteering courses or in updating/sharing your course design experience with other course designers? Tony Pinkham will lead a two-hour course design workshop for both first-time and experienced course designers. The workshop will have two sections for beginner/novice courses (white/yellow courses) and intermediate/advanced courses (orange/brown/green/red/blue courses). Each section will begin with a brief explanation of the current design requirements then spend more time discussing the merits of sample courses and designing new courses.

First-time course designers will be introduced to the basics of designing courses and can learn from others how they can deal with design challenges. Experienced course designers can learn about updated design guidelines and share their design experience with others. Everyone will get a copy of design guidelines, and maps to practice designing courses. By the end of the workshop, first-time course designers will be ready to design courses for a local event and experienced course setters will be ready for designing courses for events with increased technical requirements, such as regional or national ranking events. Everyone will have a great chance to network with others so that they know who they can collaborate with when designing or vetting courses in the future.

The room at Taborspace has ample distance between participants.

Register by March 23 using the on-line waiver. For questions and suggestions contact trainer Tony Pinkham or training coordinator Anndy Wiselogle. Once you register, we’ll send you the room location.
