Advanced Training

The Columbia River Orienteering Club is proud to offer an Advanced Training for experienced orienteers to increase their speed, navigation skills, and concentration. On the slope of Mt. Hood in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, we'll have four separate exercises planned. The two key exercises are for Saturday afternoon when we’ll work in pairs or as a full group - if you're able to attend the camp, try to make it for these! The other two exercises can be done whenever, either Saturday morning, Saturday evening, or Sunday morning. And of course there will be time to hang out and chat with other orienteers.

The trainer Ali Crocker is a teacher, a long time member of the U.S. National Orienteering Team and the Columbia River Orienteering Club, and an enthusiastic and cheerful person. You may have heard of her.

Who should register

The training is offered to CROC members, and we extend the invitation to members of orienteering clubs in the Pacific Northwest. You should have completed an advanced course (Brown, Green, Red or Blue).

Cost

Thanks to the beneficence of the Columbia River Orienteering Club, the trainer Ali Crocker, and the U.S. Forest Service, there is no cost to the participants.

As a corollary, you should bring your own food and water; and if it’s convenient, bring some to share. CROC will provide great training on a great map in a great place for great people. There will be no frills.

The Area

The training area on Mt. Hood has scattered trees, contours, some dense vegetation, and streams. The base for training is the Billy Bob Sno-Park on the east side of Mt. Hood.

Accommodations

Please do your own research (we offer no frills), but here are some suggestions:

Camping: The Mt. Hood National Forest offers dispersed camping right from the parking lot. There is no water. Two nearby campgrounds also offer no water.

Note:  If you’re planning to compete in the Mt. Hood Forest event at Billy Bob Sno-Park on September 1, you must not enter the area that’s south of the road FS-44 and west of the parking lot. That area is embargoed for the event.

Hood River County also has campgrounds.

Hotels or Rentals:

The small town of Dufur has a small hotel, 30 minute drive to the training.

Hood River, 50 minutes away, is popular, expensive, charming, and hard to get a place.

The Dalles (first letter T) is 40 minutes away.

Portland is an hour and fifty minutes away, with lots of places to stay, and maybe you live there or have friends there.
