Member Training - Dead Reckoning - with NO Map Features
October 10, 2026
10:00 am - noon
Columbia Park in North Portland
For CROC members only
Every once in a while an orienteering leg requires you to reach a location that has no nearby attack points. In this training we’ll focus on setting accurate bearings and traveling the exact distance to reach that location. This is a challenge: there will be no features on the map to help you. No vegetation, no contour lines, no rock features. The first few legs are in the open, then legs go through a runnable woods, and finally we explore what to do with an obstacle in your way. It’s all in a city park so no one will get lost.
The workshop begins at 10:00 am with a group explanation and short practice on using the compass and measuring your pace count. Then individually people practice the skills on a couple short loops.
This training is for CROC members only; there is no cost. Register here by October 8 and we’ll send you the exact starting point. For questions and suggestions, contact trainer Anndy Wiselogle.
