Member Training: Using Vegetation Boundaries
Sunday, September 27, 2026
10:00 am - noon
Gabriel Park in SW Portland
For CROC members only
One of the key skills of orienteering is using handrails, and one of the more challenging types of handrails to use are vegetation boundaries. So this training is all about seeing and using vegetation boundaries.
We will use a simplified Gabriel Park map which contains only the vegetation: no trails, no contours, no buildings, no fences, just the vegetation. This simplified map will force you to ignore all those other clues that you normally use, and focus entirely on using the vegetation to navigate around the course.
This training is for CROC members only; there is no cost. Register here by Thursday, September 24, and we’ll send you the exact starting point. For questions contact trainer Bjorn Freeman-Benson or training coordinator Anndy Wiselogle.
