Member Training - Abstracting the Map: What's Important?
Sunday, November 22, 2026
10:00 am - noon
Laurelhurst Park in SE Portland
For CROC members only
Orienteering maps have lots of details. Lots and lots of details. One of the skills of good orienteers is ignoring the details that aren't important in order to focus more on the details that are. In this training, you start at the picnic table with a map of the park and the course, plus a blank piece of paper and some colored pens. Your first task is to draw your own map containing just the details that are important for your navigation. The trail you will follow is probably important, but that thicket over there is probably not, etc. Then, when you've got a map that will work for you, you leave the real map behind and go run the course using your custom map. You will rapidly discover if you've included enough detail in your map!
This training is for CROC members only; there is no cost. Register here by November 19 and we’ll send you the exact starting point. For questions and suggestions contact trainer Bjorn Freeman-Benson or training coordinator Anndy Wiselogle.
